To understand Islam's view on other belief systems, we must first confront a modern philosophical trend: the idea of absolute moral and spiritual relativism. Today, it is popular to claim that "all religions are basically the same" or that "all paths lead to God."
While this sounds comforting, it is logically impossible. If Religion A claims God is strictly one, Religion B claims God is three in one, Religion C claims there are thousands of gods, and Religion D claims there is no Creator at all, they cannot all be simultaneously true. They are making mutually exclusive claims about the fundamental nature of reality. Truth, by definition, is exclusive. If the answer to an equation is 4, it inherently rejects 5, 6, and 7. Islam does not shy away from this logical reality. It asserts a definitive, uncompromising stance on the nature of truth.
The Only Chosen Path
The theological baseline of Islam is that there is only one Creator, and therefore, there has only ever been one religion acceptable to Him: the conscious submission to His will (which is the literal translation of the word Islam). The Quran explicitly declares that God has finalized His message to humanity through Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, perfected the religious framework, and actively rejected any other system of belief as a valid path to salvation.
Religion with God is Islam. Those to whom the Scripture was given differed only after knowledge came to them, out of envy among themselves. Whoever rejects the signs of God—God is quick to take account
Whoever seeks other than Islam as a religion, it will not be accepted from him, and in the Hereafter he will be among the losers
From the Islamic perspective, all previous authentic prophets (including Abraham, Moses, and Jesus) were essentially teaching "Islam" for their specific time and people—submitting to the one true God. However, because those previous messages were localized and eventually altered by humans, the final revelation (the Quran) was sent as a universal corrective to override and replace them. Once the final, uncorrupted instruction manual is delivered, humanity is obligated to follow it.
Reflection: Pause and evaluate the concept of ultimate truth. In our worldly lives, we demand strict accuracy. A doctor does not accept "any medicine" as a cure; a pilot does not accept "any direction" to land a plane. Why should the ultimate reality of our existence—the purpose of our creation and our eternal destination—be the only area where we assume contradictory answers are all equally correct? If God has provided a clear, preserved map, does it make sense that He would accept us deliberately choosing a different, corrupted one?
The Definition of Rejection
When Islam states that it "rejects" other religions, it is vital to define exactly what that means, because modern society often confuses theological disagreement with hatred or bigotry. In Islam, rejection is strictly theological and spiritual. It means that Islam views the doctrines of other religions (like the Trinity, reincarnation, or idol worship) as false, invalid, and incapable of securing salvation in the afterlife.
However, this theological rejection does not translate to the mistreatment, oppression, or forced conversion of the people who follow those religions. In fact, Islam laid down unprecedented historical laws protecting the rights of non-Muslims to practice their invalid religions in peace.
There shall be no compulsion in religion; the right way has become distinct from the wrong way. Whoever renounces evil and believes in God has grasped the most trustworthy handle; which does not break. God is Hearing and Knowing
As for those who have not fought against you for your religion, nor expelled you from your homes, God does not prohibit you from dealing with them kindly and equitably. God loves the equitable
The Islamic framework is profoundly mature: you can possess absolute certainty that your neighbor's religion is completely false and will not be accepted by God, while simultaneously believing that God commands you to treat that same neighbor with perfect justice, charity, and respect in this world.
Reflection: Think about what true tolerance actually means. Real tolerance is not pretending that all beliefs are equally valid—that is simply compromising your own intellect. Real tolerance is holding a deep, uncompromising conviction that you are entirely right and others are entirely wrong, yet still treating those who disagree with you with absolute dignity and justice. Does the Islamic separation between rejecting the belief and protecting the believer offer a more honest, robust framework for a diverse society than pretending all contradictions are true?
Before we can intellectually analyze specific world religions, we must establish the metrics by which they are evaluated. When Islam examines any other belief system, it does not dismiss it randomly or out of blind tribalism. Instead, it runs the religion through two highly specific, logical filters. If a religion falls into either of these two categories, it fails the test of being the absolute truth, and is therefore rejected as a valid path to salvation.
1. Corrupted by Human Hands (Tahrif)
Islam possesses a uniquely inclusive historical view: it acknowledges that God sent thousands of prophets to different nations throughout human history. Therefore, Islam recognizes that several major world religions today actually began as legitimate divine revelations.
However, unlike the Quran, God did not promise to eternally preserve those earlier messages. They were entrusted to the scholars and leaders of those specific times. Over centuries, these original messages fell victim to Tahrif (alteration, corruption, and distortion). This happened through several mechanisms:
A religion in this category might still contain fragments of the original truth—good moral teachings or remnants of a true prophet's words—but it has been hopelessly intertwined with human fabrication.
The Analogy: Imagine a well of pure, crystal-clear water provided directly by a King to cure a disease. Over time, the villagers add their own ingredients to it—some sugar, some food coloring, and a few drops of poison. Even if the original pure water is still technically in the well, the mixture as a whole is now toxic. You can no longer drink from it to be cured.
2. Not from God (Human Invention)
The second filter applies to religions, philosophies, and spiritual paths that never had a divine origin to begin with. These are systems entirely fabricated from the human mind. Throughout history, brilliant philosophers, social reformers, or tribal leaders have observed suffering, societal chaos, or injustice, and attempted to create a system to fix it. They meditated, synthesized existing cultural ideas, and developed moral frameworks.
While these systems often promote excellent social values (such as peace, self-discipline, or charity), they completely lack the fundamental requirement of a true religion: a chain of divine revelation. They are not based on a Creator communicating with a chosen human messenger via an Angel. Because human intellect is bound by the physical world, it can never successfully guess the realities of the Unseen—the true nature of God, the exact mechanics of the afterlife, or the specific purpose of creation.
The Analogy: Imagine a group of people trapped in a massive, locked maze with no windows. A brilliant engineer among them might design a highly disciplined schedule for rationing food, resolving disputes, and keeping everyone calm. His system is brilliant for social order, but because he is trapped in the maze himself, he cannot possibly draw a map to the exit. Only someone looking at the maze from the outside (the Creator) can provide the blueprint for escape.
Reflection: Consider how these two criteria organize the complex landscape of human history. When we look at the thousands of religions that have existed, they all inevitably fall into one of these two categories: they were either made by men trying to reach up, or they were sent by God reaching down but were eventually vandalized by men. If God’s purpose is to guide us, does it not logically demand that we seek out the single message that is both definitively from Him and perfectly protected from human tampering?
To analyze Judaism from the Islamic perspective, we must begin with a crucial point of respect: Islam holds Prophet Moses (Musa) in the highest possible regard. He is mentioned by name in the Quran more than any other person, including Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Islam absolutely affirms that the original message given to Moses—the Tawrat (Torah)—was a pure, divine revelation containing light, guidance, and strict monotheism.
However, when we apply the first criteria of rejection—Corruption (Tahrif)—to modern Judaism, both Islamic theology and secular historical scholarship align perfectly. The religion practiced today is fundamentally different from the pure message delivered by Moses, primarily because the original text was lost, rewritten, and heavily edited by unknown human scribes over centuries.
Historical Evidence: The Lost Text
If a religion claims to be the absolute truth, it must possess a verifiable, unbroken chain of transmission back to the original prophet. Modern Judaism lacks this. Historically, the original scrolls of the Torah were kept in the Ark of the Covenant inside the First Temple of Jerusalem. In 586 BCE, the Babylonian King Nebuchadnezzar conquered Jerusalem, completely destroyed the Temple, and exiled the Israelites to Babylon. During this catastrophic event, the original manuscripts of the Torah were lost or destroyed.
The Hebrew Bible we have today was largely reconstructed and edited from memory and oral traditions centuries later, spearheaded by the scribe Ezra (Uzayr in Islamic tradition) and subsequent scribes. Modern secular historians and biblical scholars universally agree on this. The prevailing academic consensus, known as the Documentary Hypothesis, states that the modern Torah was not written by Moses, but was pieced together by anonymous editors from at least four different historical sources (known as J, E, D, and P) spanning several centuries.
Textual Evidence: The Fingerprints of Scribes
The Quran explicitly states that the scribes of Israel began writing the scripture with their own hands and claiming it was from God. We do not have to guess if this is true; the modern Torah contains glaring textual proof of human editing.
1. The Impossible Authorship
Judaism traditionally claims that Moses authored the entire Torah (the first five books of the Bible). Yet, the final chapter of the Torah describes a highly specific event:
Reference: Deuteronomy 34:5-6 — "And Moses the servant of the Lord died there in Moab, as the Lord had said. He buried him in Moab, in the valley opposite Beth Peor, but to this day no one knows where his grave is."
The Logical Paradox: This creates an irreconcilable paradox regarding authorship. A man cannot document the historical account of his own death and describe his own burial. Furthermore, the phrase "to this day" inherently implies that a significant amount of time has passed between the death of Moses and the moment the author is writing the text.
Modern secular biblical scholars and theologians alike overwhelmingly acknowledge that these passages (along with many others throughout the Torah) were added by later, anonymous scribes centuries after Moses lived. From an Islamic paradigm, this provides clear textual evidence of Tahrif (the human alteration and interpolation of prior divine scriptures). It demonstrates that the Torah in its current biblical form is not the pristine, original revelation given directly to Moses, but rather a document that has been edited, appended, and historically reconstructed by unknown human hands over generations.
2. The Humanization of God (Anthropomorphism)
When humans write religious texts, they inevitably project their own physical and psychological weaknesses onto the Creator. The original pure monotheism of Moses was corrupted into a theology where God is depicted with severe human limitations.
In Islamic theology, the Creator of the universe does not lose wrestling matches to humans, does not get tired, and does not make mistakes that He later regrets. These textual additions are the clearest evidence of human hands altering the divine concept of God.
The Shift to Tribal Ethnocentrism
The final piece of evidence regarding the corruption of Judaism is its shift from a universal truth to an ethno-nationalist identity. True divine revelation is meant for humanity. However, over centuries of persecution and isolation, the human editors of the texts shifted the theology inward. Judaism became an exclusive, tribal religion. God was no longer universally the "Lord of the Worlds," but specifically the "God of Israel."
Salvation and chosen status were tied directly to genetics and bloodline (being born to a Jewish mother) rather than universal faith and submission to the Creator. Because of this, Judaism generally does not seek converts. A religion that claims to be the ultimate truth for humanity cannot logically restrict salvation to a specific genetic tribe.
Reflection: Consider the immense fragility of ancient history. If the text holding your eternal salvation was destroyed in a war, rewritten hundreds of years later by anonymous men, and contains verses detailing the death of the very man who supposedly wrote it, can you trust it with absolute certainty? Does it not logically follow that the Creator would need to send a final, incorruptible revelation—a book protected from the hands of scribes—to restore the pure, universal monotheism of Moses?
Just as with Judaism, the Islamic analysis of Christianity begins with profound reverence. In Islam, Jesus (Isa al-Masih) is a beloved, mighty messenger of God, the Messiah, and a performer of miraculous healings by God's permission. Furthermore, his mother, Mary (Maryam), is considered the greatest and purest woman to ever walk the earth, having an entire chapter of the Quran named after her.
Islam affirms that the original message given to Jesus—the Injil (Gospel)—was a pure, divine revelation that confirmed the strict monotheism of Moses. However, when we apply the first criterion of rejection—Corruption (Tahrif)—we find that modern Christianity represents a catastrophic theological departure from the actual words of the historical Jesus. The religion of Jesus was corrupted into a religion about Jesus. Over three centuries, a human prophet was slowly elevated to the status of a divine being through a mixture of mistranslation, anonymous authorship, and Roman political decrees.
The Original Message vs. The Theological Shift
If you read the earliest accounts of Jesus's life, his message is identical to every prophet before him: absolute monotheism and submission to the Creator. When Jesus was asked directly what the most important commandment was, he did not say, "Believe that I am God," nor did he introduce the Trinity. He quoted the Torah:
Reference: Mark 12:29 — "The most important one," answered Jesus, "is this: 'Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.'"
Nowhere in the entire Bible does the word "Trinity" appear. Nowhere does Jesus explicitly say the exact phrase, "I am God, worship me." Instead, he explicitly separates himself from God's absolute knowledge and power.
Reference: Mark 13:32 — "But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father."
The core Christian doctrines of the Trinity (God as three distinct persons in one essence) and the Incarnation (God becoming a physical human being) were entirely foreign to the Jewish people to whom Jesus preached. These concepts only took root after Jesus departed, heavily championed by Paul of Tarsus—a man who never met Jesus physically and who shifted the religion away from Jewish law to appeal to a Gentile, Greco-Roman audience that was already deeply accustomed to myths of gods taking human form.
The Roman Influence and the Council of Nicaea
The corruption of Christianity from strict monotheism to the Trinity is not a conspiracy theory; it is a meticulously documented historical event. For the first 300 years after Jesus, the early Christian communities were deeply divided regarding his nature. Many early Christians (like the Ebionites) strictly maintained that Jesus was solely a human prophet, while others (like the followers of Arius) fiercely argued that he was a created being, not co-equal or co-eternal with God.
This theological civil war threatened to tear apart the Roman Empire. In 325 CE, the pagan Roman Emperor Constantine—who wanted to unify his empire—convened the Council of Nicaea. It was at this political council, driven by a Roman Emperor and a faction of bishops, that the divinity of Jesus was formalized by human vote. Those who maintained that Jesus was only a human prophet were declared heretics, excommunicated, and their writings were systematically burned.
The Trinity was not a divine revelation brought by Jesus; it was a philosophical compromise hammered out in a Roman courtroom centuries after he was gone.
Textual Corruption and Anonymous Authorship
Just as the Torah was lost and rewritten, the New Testament suffers from severe textual vulnerabilities that disqualify it as the preserved word of God.
1. Anonymous Greek Authorship
Jesus and his disciples spoke Aramaic. Yet, the earliest existing manuscripts of the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) are written entirely in Greek, decades after Jesus ascended. Furthermore, modern secular biblical scholars overwhelmingly agree that the names attached to these Gospels were added much later; the actual texts were written anonymously by highly educated Greek-speaking Christians, not by the original, illiterate fishermen disciples of Jesus.
2. The Proven Forgeries (Interpolations)
Because the Bible did not originally contain the concept of the Trinity, later scribes physically altered the text to force the doctrine into existence. The most famous example in biblical scholarship is the Johannine Comma (1 John 5:7).
For centuries, the King James Version of the Bible contained this verse: "For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one." This was the ultimate proof text for the Trinity.
However, when modern scholars examined the oldest Greek manuscripts, they discovered this verse did not exist. It was a complete fabrication inserted into the Latin translations hundreds of years later by a scribe. Today, if you open any modern academic Bible (like the Revised Standard Version or the NIV), this verse has been entirely removed or relegated to a footnote because Christian scholars openly admit it is a forgery.
Reflection: I invite you to trace the logical thread. For thousands of years, from Abraham to Moses, God's message was simple: I am One, do not worship anything besides Me. Does it make sense that God would suddenly change His own nature, become a human being, die on a cross, and introduce a complex, mathematical paradox (the Trinity) that His own prophet never clearly articulated? If a doctrine was formalized by a Roman Emperor, and verses had to be faked by scribes to support it, can we trust our eternal salvation to it? This is exactly why Islam was sent—to strip away the Roman and Pauline corruptions and return Jesus to his rightful, honorable position as a mighty human messenger of the One True God.
When observing Hinduism today, it appears to be the ultimate antithesis of Islamic monotheism. It is a vast, highly complex system encompassing the worship of millions of deities, the carving of physical idols, and the belief in divine incarnations (avatars) taking human and animal forms.
At first glance, one might categorize Hinduism strictly as a human-invented mythology (Not from God). However, when scholars of comparative religion dig into the deepest, oldest layers of Hindu scripture, a fascinating reality emerges. Hinduism perfectly fits the first Islamic criterion of rejection: Corruption (Tahrif).
The oldest texts of Hinduism describe a supreme, formless Creator and actively forbid idol worship, indicating that the original roots of the tradition may have been influenced by a true monotheistic message that was later buried under thousands of years of human alteration.
The Original Message: Pure Monotheism in the Vedas
In Hinduism, scriptures are divided into two main categories: Shruti (that which is heard/revealed) and Smriti (that which is remembered/written by humans). The Vedas and the Upanishads belong to the Shruti category and are universally considered the oldest and most authoritative texts in the religion.
When we read these ancient texts, the theology is stunningly similar to the strict monotheism (Tawhid) found in the Quran. The Vedas speak of a single, supreme, formless Creator known as Brahman (not to be confused with the deity Brahma or the Brahmin caste).
Consider these direct verses from the most authoritative Hindu scriptures:
Chandogya Upanishad, 6:2:1 — "Ekam evadvitiyam" (He is One only without a second).
Shvetashvatara Upanishad, 6:9 — "Of Him there are neither parents nor lord." (Strikingly identical to Surah Al-Ikhlas in the Quran: "He neither begets nor is born").
Furthermore, the oldest texts explicitly condemn the carving of idols and the worship of physical representations of God:
Yajurveda, 32:3 — "Na tasya pratima asti" (There is no image of Him whose glory verily is great).
Yajurveda, 40:9 — "They enter darkness, those who worship the natural elements (Air, Water, Fire, etc.). They sink deeper in darkness, those who worship sambhuti (created things/idols)."
If a Muslim were to read these specific verses in isolation, they would find absolutely nothing objectionable. They describe a singular, formless, uncreated God who cannot be captured in an image.
The Corruption: Puranas and Human Invention
If the oldest and most sacred texts of Hinduism command the worship of one formless God and forbid idols, how did modern Hinduism become defined by millions of gods and ubiquitous idol worship? This is the ultimate historical example of Tahrif (corruption). Over thousands of years, as the religion spread and absorbed various tribal cultures across the Indian subcontinent, the strict, intellectual monotheism of the Vedas was diluted.
Human authors began writing the Smriti texts—specifically the Puranas and the epic poems (like the Mahabharata and Ramayana). These were human-written stories designed to make the religion more accessible to the common masses.
The Islamic Verdict: Shirk
In Islam, the absolute worst spiritual crime a human being can commit is Shirk—associating partners with the Creator or giving the attributes of the Creator to the creation. While Hinduism may have originated from a legitimate monotheistic truth, it has been fatally corrupted by human hands. The religion morphed from worshipping the Creator alone to worshipping the Creator through His creation (idols, animals, and human avatars). Because the original texts were not divinely protected, human imagination overtook divine revelation.
Reflection: Why do human beings always try to physically shape God? From the Golden Calf of the Israelites to the stone idols of ancient Arabia and India, human history is a constant cycle of receiving the truth of an Unseen God, and then slowly degrading that truth by carving it into a rock or painting it as a man. If a religion's own foundational texts explicitly say "There is no image of Him," yet its modern practice is entirely centered around images, is it safe to follow the modern practice? This historical vulnerability is exactly why the Quran is so fiercely uncompromising on the formlessness and absolute oneness of God.
When observing Buddhism, one finds a tradition deeply admired worldwide for its emphasis on peace, extreme self-discipline, mindfulness, and the alleviation of human suffering. Its founder, Siddhartha Gautama (the Buddha), was undeniably a profound thinker who observed the miseries of the world and dedicated his life to finding a psychological and behavioral cure for them. However, when analyzed through the Islamic theological framework, Buddhism falls strictly into the second criterion of rejection: Not from God (Human Invention).
Despite its excellent moral codes and ethical disciplines, Islam does not classify Buddhism as a divine religion. It is, fundamentally, a human-constructed philosophy. To understand why it is theologically invalid as a path to eternal salvation, we must look at its core teachings regarding the Creator.
The Absence of a Creator Concept
The most defining characteristic of Buddhism is that it is essentially non-theistic. The entire concept of a Supreme Creator—an all-knowing, all-powerful God who created the universe, dictates moral law, and judges humanity in the afterlife—is entirely absent from Buddhist doctrine.
When confronting the Brahmanical (early Hindu) beliefs in a supreme creator deity (often referred to as Brahma or Ishvara), the Buddha aggressively deconstructed the idea in his earliest recorded teachings (the Pali Canon).
1. The Delusion of the "Creator"
In the Brahmajala Sutta and the Patika Sutta, the Buddha explains the origin of the "Creator God" concept as a massive psychological delusion. He taught that the universe goes through endless cycles of expansion and contraction. At the beginning of a new cycle, the first being to be reborn into the highest heavenly realm is Maha Brahma.
Because Brahma is born first, lives for an unfathomable amount of time, and sees other beings eventually reborn after him, he becomes arrogant and deluded, declaring:
"I am Brahma, the Great Brahma, the Vanquisher, the All-Seer, the Disposer, the Lord, the Maker, the Creator... By me are these beings created."
The Buddha taught that this deity is simply a mortal being trapped in the cycle of reincarnation who has falsely convinced himself—and others—that he is the Creator.
2. The Problem of Evil and Free Will
The Buddha also used strict logic to dismantle the idea of an all-powerful Creator. He argued that if a Supreme Being created everything, then that God must be held responsible for all the evil, murder, and suffering in the world, which would destroy the concept of human free will and personal Karma.
Reference: In the Tittha Sutta (AN 3.61), the Buddha says: "If that is so, venerable sirs, then it is due to God's creation that people kill, steal... But those who have recourse to God's creation as the decisive factor will lack the impulse and the effort doing this or not doing that."
Furthermore, in the Bhuridatta Jataka, texts attributed to the Buddha's teachings actively mock the justice of a Creator God:
"He who has eyes can see the sickening sight; Why does not Brahma set his creatures right? ... Why do fraud, lies, and ignorance prevail? ... I count your Brahma one the unjust among, Who made a world in which to shelter wrong."
When Siddhartha Gautama was asked metaphysical questions about the origin of the universe, the existence of a Supreme God, or the nature of the soul, he famously refused to answer them. In Buddhist texts, these are known as the "Unanswerable Questions" (Avyakata).
Reference: In the Cula-Malunkyovada Sutta (Majjhima Nikaya 63), a monk demands the Buddha explain whether the universe is eternal or not, and what happens to the soul. The Buddha responds with the famous parable of the poisoned arrow: If a man is shot with a poisoned arrow, he should not waste time asking who shot it, what wood the bow was made of, or where the archer lived. He should simply pull the arrow out.
For the Buddha, the "poisoned arrow" was human suffering (Dukkha). His entire focus was strictly on the human mind—how to extinguish desire and achieve Nirvana (a state of liberation from suffering and the cycle of rebirth).
Because Buddhism fundamentally lacks the concept of a Creator God, it automatically fails the baseline test of being a true religion in Islam. A true religion, by definition, must be anchored in the recognition and worship of the One who created us.
A Philosophy of the Mind, Not a Revelation
Because there is no God in the Buddhist concept, the origin of the teachings is purely human.
Siddhartha Gautama never claimed to be a prophet. He never claimed that an angel (like Gabriel) came down from the heavens to deliver a divine scripture to him or that God revealed anything to him. He never said that he is God but still people started worshipping him by creating his idols. He achieved his "enlightenment" by sitting under a Bodhi tree, relying entirely on human meditation, intense focus, and his own internal intellectual realization.
In Islam, human intellect and meditation are highly praised, but they are physically and spiritually bound by the universe. A human being sitting under a tree can diagnose that humans suffer because of greed and attachment (which are accurate psychological observations), but a human being cannot meditate their way into knowing the precise realities of the Unseen (Al-Ghayb).
These truths require external, downward revelation from the Creator. By relying entirely on the upward reach of the human mind, Buddhism remains trapped within the confines of human psychology.
The Islamic Verdict: A Moral Philosophy
Islam draws a sharp line between a good moral philosophy and a divine religion. You can be a highly disciplined, peaceful, and detached person who never harms a fly (as a strict Buddhist might be), but if you do not acknowledge, thank, and worship the Creator who gave you your life, your lungs, and your mind, you have missed the entire primary purpose of your existence.
In the Islamic worldview, fixing human suffering is a noble goal, but it is a secondary goal. The primary goal of human existence is to know and worship God.
Reflection: Imagine living in a beautifully furnished house provided by a generous, unseen benefactor. You spend your entire life meticulously keeping the house clean, fixing the plumbing, and ensuring absolute harmony among your roommates. You achieve perfect peace inside the house. However, you completely ignore the benefactor who built the house, refusing to acknowledge him, thank him, or answer his letters. Is your behavior truly complete? Buddhism is a masterclass in keeping the internal "house" of the mind clean, but it entirely ignores the Landlord of the universe.
Of all the major world religions, Sikhism often feels the most familiar to a Muslim. Founded in the Punjab region of India during the 15th century, Sikhism preaches strict monotheism, fiercely rejects idol worship, denounces the caste system, and places a massive emphasis on charity and equality.
Because of these profound similarities, Muslims hold a deep respect for the moral framework of Sikhism. However, when evaluated through the strict theological lens of Islam, Sikhism falls into the second criterion of rejection: Not from God (Human Invention/Synthesis).
To understand why Islam views Sikhism as a human-constructed philosophy rather than a divine religion, we must look at the specific historical environment in which it was born and how its foundational texts were assembled.
The Historical Context: A Solution to Societal Friction
Religions sent by God are revealed to correct theological falsehoods. Human philosophies, on the other hand, are usually created to solve immediate societal friction. Sikhism is a prime example of the latter.
In 15th-century India, the society was violently fractured by a clash of two massive, diametrically opposed civilizations. On one side was Hinduism, deeply entrenched in polytheism, idol worship, and a rigid, oppressive caste system. On the other side was Islam, characterized by uncompromising monotheism and political dominance under the ruling empires of the time. The friction between these two groups caused immense social unrest, bloodshed, and division.
Observing this chaos, the founder of Sikhism, Guru Nanak, sought a spiritual middle ground. His famous first defining statement after a period of deep meditation was:
"There is no Hindu, there is no Muslim, so whose path shall I follow? I shall follow God's path."
Guru Nanak was a brilliant social reformer. He synthesized a new path specifically designed to bridge the bloody divide between the two communities. He took the strict monotheism and rejection of idols from Islam, and combined it with the concepts of Karma (action) and Samsara (reincarnation) from Hinduism.
While this synthesis was a beautiful and highly effective human solution to bring peace and equality to a warring society, a theological compromise between two opposing systems is the hallmark of human sociology, not divine revelation. God does not negotiate the truth to make warring factions comfortable.
The Absence of Prophetic Revelation (Wahyu)
In the Abrahamic framework, a true religion must be initiated by direct divine revelation (Wahyu). This means the Creator sends an Angel (Gabriel) to a human messenger with specific, literal words and a divine legal code.
Guru Nanak and the nine subsequent Sikh Gurus never claimed this type of prophethood. They did not claim that an angel descended to them with a finalized scripture from the Creator or that God revealed them anything directly. Instead, they claimed internal divine illumination—a deep, mystical realization of God achieved through meditation and spiritual poetry. This is fundamentally different from prophetic revelation. In Islamic terminology, a person who writes beautiful, spiritual poetry about God is a mystic or a wise sage, but they are not a Prophet (Nabi or Rasul).
The clearest proof that Sikhism is a human-assembled tradition is its holy book, the Guru Granth Sahib. Unlike the Quran, which is solely the recitation of what was revealed to one prophet, the Guru Granth Sahib is an anthology. It was compiled by the Gurus, but it deliberately includes the poetry, hymns, and writings of over a dozen different human beings who were not Sikhs. It includes the writings of Hindu saints (like Ramananda) and Muslim Sufi mystics (like Baba Farid and Kabir).
If a book is the literal, unadulterated word of the Creator, you cannot simply add the poetry of various human mystics into it, no matter how beautiful their poetry is. The inclusion of multiple human authors proves the text is a human compilation of spiritual wisdom, not a direct, exclusive revelation from God.
The Islamic Verdict: A Noble Reform Movement
Islam recognizes Sikhism as a highly noble, morally upright human reform movement. It successfully eradicated the caste system among its followers and established a beautiful tradition of feeding the poor (the Langar). However, theology is not judged solely by its social utility. By synthesizing incompatible theological concepts (combining the One God of Islam with the endless cycle of reincarnation from Hinduism) and relying on the spiritual poetry of human sages rather than the direct, angelic revelation of a Prophet, Sikhism remains a human attempt to reach God, rather than God's definitive instruction reaching down to humanity.
Reflection: When a society is tearing itself apart over religious differences, a peacemaker who steps in and says, "Let's take the best parts of both your beliefs and combine them so we can stop fighting," is a hero of humanity. But is that peacemaker a Prophet? There is a profound difference between a societal compromise and absolute truth. If an engineer blends the blueprints of an airplane and a submarine to make two fighting engineering teams happy, the resulting vehicle might look beautiful, but it will neither fly nor swim perfectly. Absolute truth cannot be synthesized from opposing parts; it must be delivered, whole and uncompromised, directly from the Source.
When Islam presents such an uncompromising stance on exclusive truth, it naturally challenges the modern sensibilities of inclusivity and pluralism. For a seeker of truth, several highly logical questions arise regarding justice, good deeds, and the fate of those outside the fold of Islam.
Here is how Islamic theology addresses the four most common objections regarding its rejection of other religions.
1. "Isn't it unfair to people who were born in isolated places and never heard of Islam?"
This is often called the "geographical lottery" objection. The argument suggests that if God only accepts Islam, then a person born on a remote island or in a civilization completely isolated from the Prophet's ﷺ message is unfairly doomed to Hell simply because of where they were born.
The Rebuttal: Islam completely agrees that this would be unjust, and Islamic theology explicitly prevents this scenario. The Quran establishes a fundamental rule of divine justice: God never punishes a people without first sending them a messenger or clear proof.
In Islamic theology, individuals who die never having heard of Islam, or who only received a severely distorted, terrifyingly false version of it (such as propaganda equating Islam to terrorism), fall into a special category known as Ahl al-Fatrah (The People of the Interregnum).
God is perfectly just (Al-'Adl). Islamic scholars detail that these individuals will not be judged based on rules they never received. Instead, God will give them a distinct, customized test in the afterlife to determine what they would have done had the truth reached them. No one will enter the Hellfire because of a geographical accident; they will only enter it if they consciously recognize the absolute truth and arrogantly choose to reject it.
2. "What about good non-Muslims? Will a Buddhist monk or a philanthropist go to Hell despite their good deeds?"
This is the most common emotional objection. If a non-Muslim spends their life building hospitals, feeding the poor, and being a wonderful neighbor, does Islam teach that their deeds are worthless simply because they don't say the Islamic declaration of faith?
The Rebuttal: God is entirely fair, and He rewards every single good deed. However, the reward depends entirely on who the deed was done for.
Imagine you work incredibly hard for Company A. You show up early, you build their infrastructure, and you make them millions of dollars. But at the end of the month, you walk into the headquarters of Company B and demand a paycheck. Company B will look at you and say, "You did great work, but you didn't do it for us. Go collect your payment from the company you worked for."
In Islam, the currency of the afterlife is intention. If a person does brilliant philanthropic work for the sake of humanity, for fame, for inner peace, or for a false deity, God will fully reward them with exactly what they sought: He will give them wealth, global respect, and good health in this worldly life. They receive their paycheck here.
But if they actively rejected the Creator, they cannot arrive in the afterlife and demand Paradise from a God they refused to acknowledge or worship. You cannot demand an eternal reward from a Landlord whose existence you denied. Good deeds are the vehicle, but correct belief (Tawhid) is the key in the ignition.
3. "Isn't it arrogant to claim you have the absolute truth and billions of others are wrong?"
In today's culture, making an exclusive truth claim is often seen as a sign of supreme arrogance or intolerance.
The Rebuttal: Arrogance is claiming superiority based on something you possess inherently—like your race, your wealth, or your lineage. Claiming that a mathematical equation has only one right answer is not arrogance; it is simply acknowledging objective reality.
If a doctor tells a patient, "This specific medicine is the only cure for your disease; the other ten bottles on the shelf are poison," the doctor is not being arrogant. The doctor is being truthful and trying to save the patient's life.
Islam does not claim exclusivity because Muslims believe they are genetically superior or inherently smarter. It claims exclusivity because the evidence—the linguistic miracle of the Quran, the preservation of the text, and the historical reality of the Prophet ﷺ—proves it is the uncorrupted instruction manual from the Creator. To know this evidence and pretend other paths are equally valid just to be polite is not humility; it is concealing the truth.
4. "How can you say you love Jesus and Moses, but then completely reject their religions?"
People often find it contradictory that Muslims revere figures like Moses, Jesus, and Abraham as the greatest men to ever live, yet aggressively reject Judaism and Christianity.
The Rebuttal: Islam does not reject the original religions of Moses and Jesus; it rejects what humans turned them into centuries after those prophets died.
To a Muslim, loving Jesus does not mean worshipping the Roman Catholic doctrines that were voted on by Emperor Constantine 300 years after Jesus left the earth. Loving Jesus means following the exact same theology Jesus actually practiced: praying with your face on the ground, fasting, refusing to eat pork, greeting people with "Peace be upon you," and worshipping the One True God exclusively.
Muslims believe they are the true inheritors of the legacy of Abraham, Moses, and Jesus, because Muslims follow the uncorrupted monotheism those prophets lived and died for, free from the scribal errors, political councils, and mythologies that later generations attached to their names.
Reflection: When we strip away our cultural biases and emotional attachments, the logic of ultimate reality becomes sharp. If there is a Creator, He has a nature. If He sent a message, He sent a specific one. If He laid out a path, it has boundaries. Truth is a singular, narrow road. It is not an attack on the rest of humanity to point out where the road is; it is the ultimate act of care to invite them onto it.
