Revealed in Madinah, largely in the aftermath of the Battle of Uhud, Surah An-Nisa (The Women) was sent down to address the urgent social crises of a community that had just suffered significant casualties, leaving behind numerous orphans and widows. This profoundly legislative chapter focuses heavily on social justice, dismantling pre-Islamic tribal practices by explicitly establishing and protecting the rights of the most vulnerable members of society. It introduces revolutionary legal frameworks regarding women, decreeing their absolute right to inherit, own property, and retain their dowries, while strictly regulating marriage, divorce, and family responsibilities. Beyond domestic law, the Surah provides precise mathematical directives for the distribution of inheritance, commands absolute justice and equity even against one's own self or relatives, and outlines rules for self-defense and dealing with hypocrisy. Ultimately, it serves as a comprehensive divine charter for human rights and societal ethics, warning against exploitation and ensuring that the foundation of the Muslim community was built upon mutual care, strict justice, and a deep consciousness of God.

And give orphans their properties, and do not substitute the bad for the good. And do not consume their properties by combining them with yours, for that would be a serious sin
In pre-Islamic Arabia, guardians often swapped healthy camels, sheep, or fertile lands belonging to orphan children with their own sick or low-quality property. God strictly forbade this deceitful habit.

If you fear you cannot act fairly towards the orphans—then marry the women you like—two, or three, or four. But if you fear you will not be fair, then one, or what you already have. That makes it more likely that you avoid bias
Revealed after the Battle of Uhud when many Muslim men died, leaving behind numerous widows and orphans. Guardians sometimes wanted to marry wealthy orphan girls without paying a fair dowry. God warned them that if they could not treat orphan girls with absolute fairness, they must not marry them, allowing marriage to other women (up to four) only if they can maintain strict justice, otherwise only one.

Give women their dowries graciously. But if they willingly forego some of it, then consume it with enjoyment and pleasure
In pre-Islamic times, a woman's dowry was often kept by her father or guardian. Islam made it a fundamental right that the marriage gift belongs entirely and exclusively to the bride herself as her personal property.

The rich shall not charge any wage, but the poor may charge fairly. When you hand over their properties to them, have it witnessed for them. God suffices as a Reckoner
Commands guardians to train orphans in financial skills and test their maturity. Once they reach adulthood and show responsible judgment, their full wealth must be handed over without delay.

Men receive a share of what their parents and relatives leave, and women receive a share of what their parents and relatives leave; be it little or much—a legal share

When a companion died and his relatives left his widow and young daughters penniless, this revolutionary verse established that women have an absolute, guaranteed right to inherit.

God instructs you regarding your children: The male receives the equivalent of the share of two females. If they are daughters, more than two, they get two-thirds of what he leaves. If there is only one, she gets one-half. As for the parents, each gets one-sixth of what he leaves, if he had children. If he had no children, and his parents inherit from him, his mother gets one-third. If he has siblings, his mother gets one-sixth. After fulfilling any bequest and paying off debts. Your parents and your children—you do not know which are closer to you in welfare. This is God's Law. God is Knowing and Judicious
Sets fixed inheritance shares. In Islamic law, a brother receives double his sister's share because men carry the sole legal duty to pay all living costs, food, and housing for wives and relatives, while a woman's wealth and inheritance are 100% hers with no duty to spend on anyone.

'Caretakers' (Qawwamun) means men carry the heavy duty to financially support, protect, and serve their families. In cases of severe marital breakdown, the three steps are a gradual dispute resolution process: first calm advice, second pausing intimacy to reflect, and as a last resort, a symbolic tap (which the Prophet ﷺ explained must never cause pain, injury, or leave a mark, and must never touch the face, emphasizing that the best men never strike their wives).

Revealed when a hypocrite had a dispute with a Jewish neighbor. The Jewish neighbor insisted on taking the case to the Prophet ﷺ knowing he was completely honest, but the hypocrite wanted to take it to a corrupt tribal judge whom he could bribe.

What is the matter with you, divided into two factions regarding the hypocrites, when God Himself has overwhelmed them on account of what they did? Do you want to guide those whom God has led astray? Whomever God leads astray—you will never find for him a way

Never should a believer kill another believer, unless by error. Anyone who kills a believer by error must set free a believing slave, and pay compensation to the victim’s family, unless they remit it as charity. If the victim belonged to a people who are hostile to you, but is a believer, then the compensation is to free a believing slave. If he belonged to a people with whom you have a treaty, then compensation should be handed over to his family, and a believing slave set free. Anyone who lacks the means must fast for two consecutive months, by way of repentance to God. God is All-Knowing, Most Wise
Revealed when a companion accidentally killed a former Makkan persecutor, unaware that the man had secretly accepted Islam. God established strict compensation and atonement rules for accidental death, affirming the sanctity of human life.

With God are abundant riches. You yourselves were like this before, and God bestowed favor on you; so investigate. God is well aware of what you do
Revealed when a Muslim patrol encountered a shepherd who greeted them with 'As-Salamu Alaykum,' but a companion killed him suspecting he only said it to save his sheep. The Prophet ﷺ furiously rebuked him: 'Did you open his heart to see if he was sincere?!' God forbade doubting anyone who offers peace.

Then, when they have done their prostrations, let them withdraw to the rear, and let another group, that have not prayed yet, come forward and pray with you; and let them take their precautions and their weapons. Those who disbelieve would like you to neglect your weapons and your equipment, so they can attack you in a single assault. You commit no error, if you are hampered by rain or are sick, by putting down your weapons; but take precautions. Indeed, God has prepared for the disbelievers a demeaning punishment

Revealed regarding couples facing marital strain. The Prophet's elderly wife Sawdah offered to give her scheduled evening to Aisha so she could remain married to the Prophet ﷺ in honor. God welcomed peaceful compromises made with mutual goodwill.

The People of the Scripture challenge you to bring down to them a book from the sky. They had asked Moses for something even greater. And for their saying, “We have killed the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, the Messenger of God.” In fact, they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him, but it appeared to them as if they did. Indeed, those who differ about him are in doubt about it. They have no knowledge of it, except the following of assumptions. Certainly, they did not kill him
Refutes the boast of those who claimed they had executed Jesus. The Quran states that Jesus was neither killed nor crucified; God protected him, raised him to the heavens, and his true reality was misunderstood by his persecutors.

Translation
O People of the Scripture! Do not exaggerate in your religion, and do not say about God except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, is the Messenger of God, and His Word that He conveyed to Mary, and a Spirit from Him. So believe in God and His messengers, and do not say, “Three.” Refrain—it is better for you. God is only one God. Glory be to Him—that He should have a son. To Him belongs everything in the heavens and the earth, and God is a sufficient Protector
Addressed to Christian theologians, urging them not to exaggerate the status of Jesus into divinity or describe God as a Trinity. It confirms that Jesus was a noble messenger of God and a miraculous word given to Mary, but God is strictly One.

They ask you for a ruling. Say, “God gives you a ruling concerning the person who has neither parents nor children.” If a man dies, and leaves no children, and he had a sister, she receives one-half of what he leaves. And he inherits from her if she leaves no children. But if there are two sisters, they receive two-thirds of what he leaves. If the siblings are men and women, the male receives the share of two females.” God makes things clear for you, lest you err. God is Aware of everything
Revealed when the companion Jabir was gravely ill and asked the Prophet ﷺ how his property should be divided since he had no living parents or children, only sisters. This verse provided the final inheritance rules for someone who dies without direct heirs (Kalalah).
