Revealed in Madinah, Surah Al-Hujurat (The Rooms) serves as the ethical code of conduct for the Muslim community, establishing rules of respect, brotherhood, and social integrity. It commands the believers to lower their voices in the presence of the Prophet and verify news brought by troublemakers to prevent injustice. The chapter strictly prohibits destructive social vices like mockery, backbiting, spying, and name-calling. It contains the famous universal declaration that all of humanity was created from a single pair and divided into nations and tribes solely to know one another, establishing that the most noble in the sight of God is the most conscious of Him.

Ya ayyuha allatheena amanoo la tuqaddimoo bayna yadayi Allahi warasoolihi waittaqoo Allaha inna Allaha sameeAAun AAaleemun
Translation
O you who believe! Do not place your opinions above that of God and His Messenger, and fear God. God is Hearing and Knowing
Revealed when senior companions Abu Bakr and Umar raised their voices in a heated disagreement in the presence of the Prophet ﷺ regarding which tribal administrator to appoint. Establishes the foundational principle of spiritual humility, teaching believers never to prioritize personal opinions, cultural traditions, or emotional impulses above authentic divine guidance.
Transliteration
Ya ayyuha allatheena amanoo la tarfaAAoo aswatakum fawqa sawti alnnabiyyi wala tajharoo lahu bialqawli kajahri baAAdikum libaAAdin an tahbata aAAmalukum waantum la tashAAuroona
Translation
O you who believe! Do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet, and do not speak loudly to him, as you speak loudly to one another, lest your works be in vain without you realizing
Establishes conversational decorum: forbids raising one's voice above the Prophet's ﷺ or shouting casually in his presence. When this verse was revealed, companion Thabit ibn Qays—who possessed a naturally booming loud voice—locked himself in his home in tears, fearing his good deeds were ruined, until the Prophet ﷺ personally consoled him and promised him Paradise.

Inna allatheena yaghuddoona aswatahum AAinda rasooli Allahi olaika allatheena imtahana Allahu quloobahum lilttaqwa lahum maghfiratun waajrun AAatheemun
Translation
Those who lower their voices before God’s Messenger—those are they whose hearts God has tested for piety. They will have forgiveness and a great reward
Transliteration
Inna allatheena yunadoonaka min warai alhujurati aktharuhum la yaAAqiloona
Translation
Those who call you from behind the chambers—most of them do not understand
Explains the chapter's title 'Al-Hujurat' (The Private Chambers): revealed when an uncouth Bedouin tribal delegation from Banu Tamim arrived in Medina during the heat of afternoon rest, standing outside the Prophet's private family apartments shouting: 'O Muhammad, come out to us!'
Transliteration
Walaw annahum sabaroo hatta takhruja ilayhim lakana khayran lahum waAllahu ghafoorun raheemun
Translation
Had they remained patient until you came out to them, it would have been better for them. But God is Forgiving and Merciful
Transliteration
Ya ayyuha allatheena amanoo in jaakum fasiqun binabain fatabayyanoo an tuseeboo qawman bijahalatin fatusbihoo AAala ma faAAaltum nadimeena
Translation
O you who believe! If a troublemaker brings you any news, investigate, lest you harm people out of ignorance, and you become regretful for what you have done
The universal journalistic and legal principle of verification: revealed when al-Walid ibn Uqbah was dispatched to collect Zakat from the Banu al-Mustaliq. Misinterpreting their armed welcoming parade, he fled back to Medina falsely claiming they had rebelled. This verse commanded that any report from an unverified source must be rigorously investigated before acting.
Transliteration

Translation
And know that among you is the Messenger of God. Had he obeyed you in many things, you would have suffered hardship. But God has given you the love of faith, and adorned it in your hearts, and made disbelief, mischief, and rebellion hateful to you. These are the rightly guided
Transliteration
Fadlan mina Allahi waniAAmatan waAllahu AAaleemun hakeemun
Translation
A Grace and Favor from God. God is Knowing and Wise
Transliteration

Translation
If two groups of believers fight each other, reconcile between them. But if one group aggresses against the other, fight the aggressing group until it complies with God’s command. Once it has complied, reconcile between them with justice, and be equitable. God loves the equitable
Institutes mandatory mediation and peace-building: if two Muslim groups fight, the community must intervene neutrally to negotiate justice. If one faction obstinately bullies and oppresses the other, the community must unite to stop the aggressor until rule of law is restored.
Transliteration
Innama almuminoona ikhwatun faaslihoo bayna akhawaykum waittaqoo Allaha laAAallakum turhamoona
Translation
The believers are brothers, so reconcile between your brothers, and remain conscious of God, so that you may receive mercy
Establishes universal spiritual fraternity: declares all believers to be brothers of equal dignity, obligating the community to actively resolve internal grievances and foster harmony.
Transliteration
Ya ayyuha allatheena amanoo la yaskhar qawmun min qawmin AAasa an yakoonoo khayran minhum wala nisaon min nisain AAasa an yakunna khayran minhunna wala talmizoo anfusakum wala tanabazoo bialalqabi bisa alismu alfusooqu baAAda aleemani waman lam yatub faolaika humu alththalimoona
Translation
O you who believe! No people shall ridicule other people, for they may be better than they. Nor shall any women ridicule other women, for they may be better than they. Nor shall you slander one another, nor shall you insult one another with names. Evil is the return to wickedness after having attained faith. Whoever does not repent—these are the wrongdoers
A comprehensive charter against social toxicity: criminalizes mocking others, sarcasm, public humiliation, and labeling people with hurtful, derogatory nicknames, reminding believers that the person being mocked may be vastly superior in God's eyes.
Transliteration
Ya ayyuha allatheena amanoo ijtaniboo katheeran mina alththanni inna baAAda alththanni ithmun wala tajassasoo wala yaghtab baAAdukum baAAdan ayuhibbu ahadukum an yakula lahma akheehi maytan fakarihtumoohu waittaqoo Allaha inna Allaha tawwabun raheemun
Translation
O you who believe! Avoid most suspicion—some suspicion is sinful. And do not spy on one another, nor backbite one another. Would any of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would detest it. So remain mindful of God. God is Most Relenting, Most Merciful
Shields personal privacy and mental health: strictly prohibits cynical suspicion, invasive snooping into private lives, and backbiting ('Ghibah'). The verse uses an unforgettable psychological metaphor: speaking ill of someone behind their back is morally equivalent to cannibalizing the raw flesh of your deceased brother.
Transliteration
Ya ayyuha alnnasu inna khalaqnakum min thakarin waontha wajaAAalnakum shuAAooban waqabaila litaAAarafoo inna akramakum AAinda Allahi atqakum inna Allaha AAaleemun khabeerun
Translation
O people! We created you from a male and a female, and made you races and tribes, that you may know one another. The best among you in the sight of God is the most righteous. God is All-Knowing, Well-Experienced
The definitive Islamic proclamation against racism and tribalism: revealed when noble companion Bilal ibn Rabah, an African former slave, stood on the Ka'bah to call the Adhan at the Conquest of Mecca and some Quraysh nobles scoffed. God declared that all humanity descends from a single mother and father, and that racial and national differences exist for mutual understanding, with personal righteousness ('Taqwa') being the sole criterion of nobility.

Translation
The Desert-Arabs say, “We have believed.” Say, “You have not believed; but say, ‘We have submitted,’ for faith has not yet entered into your hearts. But if you obey God and His Messenger, He will not diminish any of your deeds. God is Forgiving and Merciful.”
Delineates the psychological stages of faith: distinguishes between outward civil adherence ('Islam' - submitting socially and ritually) and deep, internalized spiritual conviction ('Iman' - faith flourishing deeply within the heart).
Transliteration
Innama almuminoona allatheena amanoo biAllahi warasoolihi thumma lam yartaboo wajahadoo biamwalihim waanfusihim fee sabeeli Allahi olaika humu alssadiqoona
Translation
The believers are those who believe in God and His Messenger, and then have not doubted, and strive for God’s cause with their wealth and their persons. These are the sincere
Transliteration
Qul atuAAallimoona Allaha bideenikum waAllahu yaAAlamu ma fee alssamawati wama fee alardi waAllahu bikulli shayin AAaleemun
Translation
Say, “Are you going to teach God about your religion, when God knows everything in the heavens and the earth, and God is aware of all things?”
Transliteration
Yamunnoona AAalayka an aslamoo qul la tamunnoo AAalayya islamakum bali Allahu yamunnu AAalaykum an hadakum lileemani in kuntum sadiqeena
Translation
They regarded it a favor to you that they have submitted. Say, “Do not consider your submission a favor to me; it is God who has done you a favor by guiding you to the faith, if you are sincere.”
Rebukes tribal arrogance: addresses the Banu Asad who came boasting that they accepted Islam without a military siege, demanding financial handouts. The verse reminds them that embracing truth is not a personal favor to God or His Messenger, but a priceless gift of divine guidance granted to them.
Transliteration
Inna Allaha yaAAlamu ghayba alssamawati waalardi waAllahu baseerun bima taAAmaloona
Translation
God knows the secrets of the heavens and the earth, and God is seeing of everything you do
