Revealed entirely in one sweeping descent during the late Makkan period, Surah Al-An'am (The Cattle) represents a profound return to the theological roots of faith, serving as a powerful and uncompromising manifesto of pure Islamic monotheism (Tawhid). It was sent down to completely dismantle the deeply entrenched polytheistic beliefs and superstitious practices of the Quraysh, particularly their baseless taboos and rituals surrounding livestock and agriculture. Instead of focusing on legal rulings, this chapter appeals directly to the human intellect and soul, urging people to observe the magnificent signs of God's Oneness embedded in the natural world—from the splitting of the seed and the falling of a leaf to the alternation of day and night. It beautifully recounts the intellectual and spiritual journey of Prophet Abraham (Ibrahim) as he logically rejected the worship of celestial bodies to submit solely to the Creator of the universe. By systematically refuting the concept of associating partners with God (Shirk) and establishing the absolute sovereignty of Allah over life, death, and provision, the Surah demands that believers strip away all falsehoods and dedicate their prayers, sacrifices, lives, and deaths exclusively to the Lord of all the worlds.

Exposes a bizarre pre-Islamic superstition: pagans divided their crops into two piles, one for God and one for their idols. If grain fell from God's pile into the idol's pile, they kept it for the idol, treating their idols with greater care than the Creator of the universe.

Say, “Come, let me tell you what your Lord has forbidden you: that you associate nothing with Him; that you honor your parents; that you do not kill your children because of poverty—We provide for you and for them; that you do not come near indecencies, whether outward or inward; and that you do not kill the soul which God has sanctified—except in the course of justice. All this He has enjoined upon you, so that you may understand.”
Known as the core moral charter of the Quran (similar to the Ten Commandments). Major companions like Ibn Mas'ud noted that these three verses lay down the timeless moral foundations of human decency: monotheism, honoring parents, protecting life, and justice.

Translation
And do not come near the property of the orphan, except with the best intentions, until he reaches maturity. And give full weight and full measure, equitably. We do not burden any soul beyond its capacity. And when you speak, be fair, even if it concerns a close relative. And fulfill your covenant with God. All this He has enjoined upon you, so that you may take heed

Translation
Or lest you say, “Had the Scripture been revealed to us, we would have been better guided than they.” Clarification has come to you from your Lord, and guidance, and mercy. Who then does greater wrong than he who gives the lie to God's messages, and turns away from them? We will repay those who turn away from Our messages with the worst kind of punishment, because of their turning away

Translation
Are they waiting for anything but for the angels to come to them, or for your Lord to arrive, or for some of your Lord’s signs to come? On the Day when some of your Lord’s signs come, no soul will benefit from its faith unless it had believed previously, or had earned goodness through its faith. Say, “Wait, we too are waiting.”
The Prophet ﷺ explained that this refers to the major signs of the Day of Judgment (such as the sun rising from the west). Once the physical laws of the universe break down, the door of repentance closes, because faith is no longer a sincere choice.

As for those who divided their religion and became sects—you have nothing to do with them. Their case rests with God; then He will inform them of what they used to do
A stern warning against fracturing into hostile sects and cults over personal egos or minor disputes. It affirms that true faith unites people under God's guidance rather than dividing them into rival factions.
