Revealed during the late Makkan period, Surah Al-A'raf (The Heights) acts as a sweeping historical and cosmic narrative that chronicles the eternal battle between divine guidance and satanic deception. It was sent down to console the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and warn the arrogant leadership of Makkah by extensively detailing the tragic fates of previous nations—such as the people of Noah, Hud, Salih, Lot, and Shu'ayb—who defied their messengers and faced divine ruin. The chapter traces the origins of this human struggle back to the very beginning, vividly depicting Satan’s arrogant refusal to bow to Adam, his expulsion, and his vow to mislead humanity, serving as a profound psychological warning against the destructive nature of pride. It takes its name from a powerful scene on the Day of Judgment depicting "The Heights," a massive partition where people whose good and bad deeds are perfectly equal wait in suspense, observing the inhabitants of both Paradise and Hellfire. By highlighting the primordial covenant where every human soul inherently testified to God's Lordship before physical birth, the Surah reminds humanity that recognizing the Creator is embedded in their nature, ultimately urging them to heed the lessons of history, cling to the mercy of revelation, and walk the path of humility.

Alif, Lam, Meem, Saad
These are individual Arabic letters (called Huruf Muqatta'at). While only God knows their complete wisdom, scholars explain they serve as a divine challenge: the Quran is made from the everyday letters of the Arabic language, yet no human can produce a chapter like it. They also served to immediately catch the listener's attention.

Expands on the story of the ancient seaside town of Aylah. Fish naturally swam close to shore on Saturday (their holy Sabbath). To cheat the rule against fishing on the Sabbath, some residents set nets on Friday and scooped up the fish on Sunday, pretending they hadn't broken the law.
Transliteration
Waith qalat ommatun minhum lima taAAithoona qawman Allahu muhlikuhum aw muAAaththibuhum AAathaban shadeedan qaloo maAAthiratan ila rabbikum walaAAallahum yattaqoona

Translation
They were succeeded by generations who inherited the Scripture and chose the materials of this world, saying, “We will be forgiven.” And should similar materials come their way, they would again seize them. Did they not make a covenant to uphold the Scripture, and to not say about God except the truth? Did they not study its contents? But the Home of the Hereafter is better for the cautious; will you not understand

Translation
And when Your Lord summoned the descendants of Adam, and made them testify about themselves. “Am I not your Lord?” They said, “Yes, we testify.” Thus you cannot say on the Day of Resurrection, “We were unaware of this.”
Describes the primordial gathering of all human souls before birth. Every soul inherently testified to God's Lordship, explaining why every human being has a natural built-in conscience and spiritual inclination (Fitrah) to seek their Creator.

Refers to a learned scholar (identified as Balaam) who was blessed with deep spiritual knowledge, but sold out his principles to corrupt rulers for money and prestige. He is compared to a panting dog that is never satisfied, symbolizing how greed ruins integrity.
Transliteration

Translation
Had We willed, We could have elevated him through them; but he clung to the ground, and followed his desires. His metaphor is that of a dog: if you chase it, it pants; and if you leave it alone, it pants. Such is the metaphor of the people who deny Our signs. So tell the tale, so that they may ponder

Translation
They ask you about the Hour, “When will it come?” Say, “Knowledge of it rests with my Lord. None can reveal its coming except He. It weighs heavily on the heavens and the earth. It will not come upon you except suddenly.” They ask you as if you are responsible for it. Say, “Knowledge of it rests with God,” but most people do not know
Critics repeatedly challenged the Prophet ﷺ to give an exact calendar date for the Day of Judgment. God answered that the precise timing of the universe's end is a divine secret kept exclusively with Him.

Translation
It is He who created you from a single person, and made from it its mate, that he may find comfort with her. Then, when he has covered her, she conceives a light load, and she carries it around. But when she has grown heavy, they pray to God their Lord, “if You give us a good child, we will be among the thankful.”
Describes how a husband and wife naturally pray for a healthy child during pregnancy, but warns against parents who slip into superstition once the child is born safely, attributing their blessing to luck or false idols instead of thanking God.
